Frequently asked questions.

At Central Virginia Physical Therapy (CVPT), we know starting physical therapy often comes with questions. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or getting back into sports, our goal is to make your experience clear, comfortable, and stress-free. Below are answers to the most common questions we hear from patients in Central Virginia — from insurance and scheduling to what to expect at your first appointment.

Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?

In most cases no! However, there are a few important exceptions.

  • If you have Medicare, we will need your physician to sign a treatment plan created after your initial PT evaluation or progress note. If you don’t have a primary care physician or specialist, we can help send you in the right direction.

  • If you have Medicaid or if this is a Worker's Compensation injury, you will need to have an MD referral prior to initiating PT.

  • Most commercial insurances do not require a referral. We can help check this for you!

All our physical therapists are eligible to treat patients under Virginia’s direct access laws!

We Can Refer

Physical Therapists are highly skilled at evaluating musculoskeletal problems. An integral part of our evaluation process is recognizing signs and symptoms that may be indicative of conditions that are beyond our expertise or scope of practice. If this occurs, we will immediately contact your physician to discuss our concerns and arrange for referral to the appropriate specialist. Ongoing communication with your physician is a routine part of our practice. If at any time during a course of treatment we determine that you are not making progress as would be expected, we will consult with your physician.

We Receive Referrals

Many of our patients are referred to our clinic by physicians or other providers that trust us to ensure you receive high quality and effective treatment. If you are currently under the care of a physician or other health care provider for the issue or injury we will be treating, we are required to send a copy of our evaluation to this provider. Referrals may be faxed to 804-523-4636 or you may bring a paper copy to your first visit.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major healthcare insurance plans. Our staff will verify your coverage before your first visit and explain any physical therapy costs, co-pays, or deductibles so there are no surprises. If you’d like, you can call us ahead of time with your insurance information, and we’ll confirm everything for you.
